'Race a Duck' aims to raise funds for local ecology charities
23/11/2009
Taking their environmental commitment even further, Provian Construction, alongside Viridor Waste Management and consulting civil engineer Peter Baxter Associates will be holding a charity event at Beddington Lakes near Croydon with all proceeds going to ecological charities.
The light-hearted event will be held in the next few weeks, where sponsored rubber ducks will be raced along a stream on a site where the three organisations have been working together. All proceeds from the event will go to the RSPB and a local ecology charity.
It is just part of the tremendous environmental benefits the companies have delivered on site. Following Viridors £112m contract from south London boroughs to boost recycling and minimise landfill, Provian Construction working with Peter Baxter Associates, was contracted to remove 200,000m³ of soil and create a new landfill cell. Part of the scheme involved the development of a series of lakes, a wildlife reserve and a flood alleviation programme as part of Viridors commitment to sustainable waste management.
During the construction of the lakes, a series of streams and weirs were assessed. It was then identified that the streams and weirs would be ideal for a duck race and the charity event was conceived! To participate in the event, donations of £2, or more per duck, per race are being invited. There will be two races in total and prizes will be given to the winners including cash and wine.
Once completed, the wildlife reserve and landfill cell will all become part of Viridors Beddington Farmlands Recycling Centre site, which also comprises green waste recycling facility and a mechanical/biological treatment system.
